This was my first time reading Jodi Picoult. I had heard of Jodi Picoult, and had been recommended her books, but for some reason, I never wanted to pick one up. My friend Courtney lent me this book, and I was happily surprised with a good read and a great plot. {And don't you always want to say Jodi Pic-COLT instead of Jodi Pic-COO? Or I am the only one here?}
From the back:
What does it mean to be a good mother?
How far would you go in the name of love--and justice?
In the course of her everyday work, career-driven assistant district attorney Nina Frost prosecutes child molesters and works determinedly to ensure that a legal system with too many loopholes keeps these criminals behind bars. But when her own five-year-old son, Nathaniel, is traumatized by a sexual assault, Nina and her husband, Caleb, a quiet and methodical stone mason, are shattered, ripped apart by an enraging sense of helplessness in the face of a futile justice system that Nina knows all too well. In a heartbeat, Nina's absolute truths and convictions are turned upside down, and she hurtles toward a plan to exact her own justice for her son--no matter the consequence, whatever the sacrifice.
When I read the first fifty or so pages of this book, I wasn't sure if I would be able to read it. As a Mother, I just didn't know if I had the stomach to read about about a five year old boy getting sexually assaulted. But then the book took a twist I was not expecting (apparently Picoult is famous for these) and found that I would be able to get through the book.
This book asks a lot of moral and ethical questions such as: Is it ever ok to take justice into your own hands?
I will definitely be reading more Jodi Picoult in the future. I liked her writing style as well as how thought provoking the book was.
